1. Do I need a permit for a fence?

Permits for fences are not needed if the fence is a standard 6 ft. or under (excluding fences for pools). Fences are not regulated by the Zoning Regulations. If it is a stockade fence the finished side does not need to face your neighbor, it can face your property. The fence can go right up to your property line, but not on the property line. (Please be sure you know where your property line is.) If the fence is going along a town road, please check with the Public Works Director for setbacks to a town road. Please check with other departments, such as the Building Department, to inquire about any permits through that department. Fences over 6ft. do need a Zoning Permit.

2. Where in town are horses, livestock, and poultry (chickens) permitted?

In the Town of Ledyard you may have horses on any property 3 acres or more – that would be considered a farm, or in an R-80 District on which the lot contains the minimum area (80,000 sq. ft.) for the zone. On a parcel which is less than 3 acres and not in an R-80 zone a special permit is required (which is a public hearing process.) Also please check with the Zoning Office for setback requirements and total number of animals per acre. NOTE: any structures in support of the animals need building permits and zoning permits.

3. Where can I put a shed (or other structures) on my property?

Any structure you propose to place or build on your property does need a zoning permit. For placement of the structure refer to Section 3.10 and Section 9.0 of the Ledyard Zoning Regulations. If the structure is behind your house (rear yard) the minimum setback is 6ft. from your property lines. Accessory structures shall be located in side or rear yards only. Please check with the Building Department for requirements for a building permit.
