Serious Motor Vehicle Accident
On November 1, 2008 at approximately 0130hrs the Ledyard Police Department received the report of a motor vehicle versus tree accident on Spicer Hill Rd near Route 117. The Ledyard Police Department, along with the Ledyard Fire Company #1, Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad, Gales Ferry Fire Department, and American Ambulance responded. On the arrival of emergency responders a BMW operated by Joseph O'Brien of 47 Park Ave Ext in Uncasville was found crashed into a tree with five occupants inside. O'Brien, as well as several of the occupants, sustained serious injuries and required extrication. After a lengthy extrication, all five were transported to the W.W. Backus Hospital for treatment of their injuries.This accident remains under investigation. Stolen Vehicle Fire
On November 21, 2008 at 2042hrs the Ledyard Police Department received a cellular 911 call regarding a fire at the Lantern Hill boat launch. Ledyard Police Officers, along with firefighters from the Ledyard Center, Mashentucket, and North Stonington Fire Departments responded. Upon the arrival of emergency units a vehicle was found to be fully engulfed in fire, as well as a sizable area of brush. After the fire was extinguished by firefighters, an investigation was launched by the Office of the Ledyard Fire Marshal and the Ledyard Police Department. Investigation revealed that the vehicle, a 2006 Volkswagon Jetta, was reported stolen from the City of New London at some point just prior to the fire being reported. On November 22, 2008 shortly after midnight the Ledyard Police Department was contacted by the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital indicating that a 17 year old had been taken to their facility with a stab wound to his torso,indicating the injury occurred at a party in the Town of Ledyard. While Police were en route to the hospital to investigate this stabbing the Ledyard Police Department received multiple 911 calls indicating that shots had been fired at #5 Wolf Ridge Gap in the Town of Ledyard. Ledyard Police Officers, Troopers from the Connecticut State Police, and Officers from the Groton Town Police Department responded. On arrival Police found a large number of people fleeing. Three people were arrested by the Ledyard Police Department for weapons violations at the scene.James Robertson Jr., 29, of 27 Hawthorne Drive, New London.was found with a loaded handgun in his possession. He was charged with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle and carrying a pistol without a permit. He was released on a $10,000 cash bond. Shawn Rucker, 20, of 12 Harvard Terrace, Gales Ferry, and Gilene Sablon, 20, of 204 Connecticut Ave., New London, were both charged with two counts of possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle after being found to have three knives and a BB gun in their possession. They are both being held on $5,000 cash bonds.The stabbing and shooting remain actively under investigation. On November 23, 2008 at approximately 1730hrs. the Ledyard Police Department received the report of a juvenile being assaulted. This assault occured in the Highlands section of Ledyard, and also involved the juvenile having items taken from him during the assualt. Subsequent investigation resulted in the arrest of two 16 year old Youthful Offenders who were charged with Robbery 2nd, Assault 3rd, Larceny 6th, and Breach of Peace. Both were held on $2,500 bond and were presented at GA 10 on 11/24/08. A juvenile male was also arrested for Assault 3rd degree. He is scheduled to appear at juvenile court Waterford.
