On July 19, 2010 at 1047hrs the Ledyard Police Department received the report of a head on motor vehicle accident having occurred on RT 12 near Whalehead Rd in the Gales Ferry section of Ledyard. Responders found two vehicles with extensive damage and injuries to both operators, along with a passenger in each vehicle. The Gales Ferry Fire Company, Ledyard Center Fire Company, Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad, Groton Ambulance, and Lawrence and Memorial paramedics responded. As a result four persons were transported to both the WW Backus Hospital and Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

The vehicles involved were a 1989 Ford Crown Victoria operated by a Loretta Manning DOB 09-11-1920 of 40 William Dr Jewett City and a 2005 Nissan operated by Patricia Guerra DOB 07-20-1964 of 145 Oswegatche Rd in Waterford.
